Vibrant communities and appealing urban villages

Taking in the bustle of Islington, leafy Alexandra Palace and wonderful views of the city from Highgate Hill, North London includes some of London’s most desirable neighbourhoods and attracts a creative crowd.

Creative hub

Although just a few miles from the city centre, The Angel Inn that stood on the corner of Islington High Street and Pentonville Road was once the first stop for stagecoaches travelling north out of London, and a busy dwelling place developed here from the 17th century. The pretty Georgian homes and garden squares of Islington and Highbury give way to Victorian terraces towards Newington Green and Stoke Newington. The area that once attracted artists and radicals - many of whom are buried in historic Abney Park Cemetery -- has mellowed but remains a haven for left leaning creatives and is abuzz with cultural activity. There are four theatres, including the world renowned dance venue Sadler’s Wells and the Almeida theatre, and Stoke Newington hosts its own summer literary festival. Islington was also home to London’s first farmers’ market, and good food abounds from the trendy chains and independents along Upper Street to the unassuming yet excellent local restaurants of Stoke Newington. The many Turkish shops and restaurants that spread across Stoke Newington, Finsbury Park and Holloway Road provide another rich source of culinary delight. Between them, Highbury Fields and Clissold Park offer an abundance of open space and leisure opportunities. Property in some parts of this area is at a premium, but good value options can still be found in Tottenham and around Holloway, where you"ll also find the Emirates Stadium, home of Arsenal Football Club.

Village life

Clustering around Alexandra Palace and Highgate Cemetery, Crouch End, Highgate, Hornsey, Muswell Hill and Wood Green have undeniable family appeal and offer top notch amenities, good state and private schools and lovely high streets. Commanding views over London, red brick Edwardian houses and a distinct village atmosphere characterise the area as a whole. Sought after Georgian and Victorian homes, 1920s and 1930s Art Deco properties and listed Modernist developments are also in the mix. Families and young professional couples have been putting down roots here since the opening of Alexandra Palace and the arrival of the railways 150 years ago. This part of North London has lost none of its attraction, partly due to wonderful green spaces from Alexandra Palace to Highgate Woods and Cemetery. It’s not all suburban charm though and, like much of North London, these areas are known for their artistic ways and left-leaning politics. Indeed, poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge lived here and socialist theorist Karl Marx is buried in Highgate Cemetery. It’s estimated that up to 40% of the population of Crouch End work in creative industries, while iconic London band The Kinks hail from nearby Muswell Hill.

Finchley . Southgate . Palmers Green

On the northernmost edge of London, Finchley, Southgate and Palmers Green are well positioned to offer a soothing alternative to inner city living. They have easy access to some of London’s most attractive woodland parks and excellent golf courses, as well as to the North Circular road, making both areas enormously popular with those who commute by car. At the same time it’s only half an hour on public transport to the heart of London, although thriving local communities and high streets mean locals have access to excellent amenities on their doorstep. Finchley has some simply stunning multi million pound mansions and many large Victorian and Edwardian homes on leafy streets. Both areas have many 1920s and 1930s properties, ranging from grand detached houses to mock Tudor semis and modest terraces. Residents include older couples downsizing, families looking to settle down and first time buyers, plus a longstanding Jewish community.

Вся специфика поступления состоит в том, что отбор происходит не на поиске того, что девочки не могут сделать, а на поиске любых способностей детей. Такая оценка состоит из 2 этапов:

1. «Play», являющийся формой тестирования готовности обучения в школе в группах по 12 человек (длительность - около часа).
2. Во втором туре оценка способностей потенциальных учащихся проводится в индивидуальном порядке.

Вакантных мест в «4+» - около 40.

Поступление «7+»

Заявки регистрируются также с мая по ноябрь предыдущего года, и в отличие от «4+» критерии зачисления на обучение в этой возрастной категории серьезнее. Испытательные экзамены проходят в январе и включают в себя:

1. Написание творческого рассказа с использованием полных предложений.
2. Свободное чтение с письменными ответами на вопросы (ответы простыми предложениями)
3. Понимание основ сложения, вычитания, умножения, деления. Умение применять знания на практике.
4. Знание таблицы умножения на 2, 3, 4, 5, 10.
5. Наличие представлений о времени, денежных единицах.

Поступление «11+»

Заявки на поступление «11+» принимаются с июня по ноябрь предыдущего года. Поступление предполагает 2 этапа испытаний:

1. Вступительный экзамен, состоящий из письменных работ по английскому языку и математике, примерный перечень которых есть на сайте Северной Коллегиальной школы.
2. Интервью, после которого будет сделан выбор в пользу того или иного кандидата. Собеседование носит неформальный характер и проходит в период с конца января до начала февраля.

В старшей школе вакантно около 60 мест.

Поступление «16+»

Заявки на поступление в North London Collegiate School в категорию «16+» принимаются с июля по октябрь предыдущего года на сайте школы в специальной форме. Затем:

1. В середине ноября кандидаты приглашаются в школу для сдачи вступительных экзаменов по предметам из учебных планов GCSE.
2. После этого отобранные кандидаты приглашаются на интервью, которое проходит в конце ноября.

На всех этапах поступления кандидаты могут приезжать в Северную Коллегиальную школу на день открытых дверей вместе с родителями. Такие мероприятия проводятся весь год.

This area spans a large area of the London Borough of Enfield, home to some of the countries most expensive property west of the borough on Ridgeway and Slades Hill. Enfield can be split into 4 distinct areas:

• Enfield Town, Chase, Slades and Hadley Wood - home to some of the capitals most expensive property west of the borough on Ridgeway, Slades Hill, Hadley Wood and Enfield Road; some that exceed the £10m mark. Shopping here can be relatively expensive in Palace Xchange but it"s home to some well known stores such as: United Colours Of Benetton, Ralph Lauren, Armani Exchange, The Arsenal Store, H&M, Next, Rolex, Per Lui, TK Maxx, Pearsons Department Store, JD, M&S, Jane Norman and specialty coffee outlets such as: Cafe Néro, Starbucks and Costa. Enfield town is also home to the worlds first working & commercial ATM machine at the Barclays Bank on The Town EN2.
• Southgate and Palmers Green - Wealthy suburban areas with beautiful victorian and edwardian era houses. It is a short bus ride from Enfield Town on the 121/329.
• Oakwood, Cockfosters, Grange Park and Cat Hill - Are upper-class suburbs included in London"s Metropolitan Green Belt, vast countryside views are not uncommon in both Chase and Oakwood. Cat Hill is also home to Trent Park and Middlesex University"s Trent Park/Cat Hill campus.
• Edmonton and Bush Hill Park - Two outer London middle-class suburbs; home to Edmonton Green shopping centre, Edmonton Green Bus Station and many shopping villages, the Edmonton constituency is the only Labour constituency in the borough.

Finchley [ edit ]

This is a large, thriving metropolitan area in North West London and can be divided into several areas including Finchley Central, East Finchley and West Finchley.

Finchley Central is one of the only areas within London to be fortunate enough to have a city farm. College Farm is an attraction for locals and tourists alike and one can expect to see horses, cows, yaks, pigs and other farmyard animals (a rare sight in London!). Finchley Central is also home to the famous "naked lady" statue at the Henly"s Corner. There are a number of hotels situated in the district ranging from smaller bed and breakfasts to the Holiday Inn Finchley.

Finchley Central contains an odd mix of upper-middle class suburbia enfused with some working class aspects too, thus giving it a rather unique vibe. There is a strong Jewish community in Finchley, however, this does not contain many Orthodox Jews who generally choose to make the neighbouring areas of Hendon and Golders Green their home. The Jewish community is represented by a number of synagogues in the area, the most prominent being the New North London Synagogue which is situtated on East End Rd. This also acts as a local hub for Jewish culture.

There are a number of restaurants in Finchley Central which are reasonably priced and these include specialist restaurants such as Kosher and Halal establishments. Finchley also has a number of bohemian and lively bars/pubs some of which have late licensing laws(very handy). Travel in and out of central London is a breeze via the Northern Line and a variety of bus routes. Although Finchley has a distinctly urban feel, one can venture close by to the neighbouring Mill Hill area in order to experience some of the great British countryside.

Kilburn [ edit ]

Kilburn is a busy, diverse area situated along a stretch of the Roman Watling Street that makes up the local Edgware Road. Northern Kilburn encompasses the smaller area of Brondesbury. Known as "Little Dublin", Kilburn spans the boroughs of Brent and Camden.

Being surrounded by generally wealthier areas, Kilburn is a mixture of influences. Historically, it was a focus point for Irish immigration (at some point it was even referred to as "County Kilburn"), and although there are few remaining in Kilburn, their influence is felt in the naming and styling of some of Kilburn"s cafes and pubs. The community is currently very diverse, both ethnically and socially, with a mix of wealthy and poor streets.

Tottenham [ edit ]

Tottenham is mentioned in the Domesday book as the homestead of a man named Tota. The village of Tottenham grew up around the area of High Cross, on the junction with the High Road (the Roman road Ermine Street) and what is now Monument Way.

As a rural village this was a popular destination for the wealthy, and Henry VIII is believed to have visited the Tudor Bruce Castle, then in the hands of the Bruce family (descended from Robert the Bruce). The area stayed semi-rural until the late 19th Century when the railway (with its new, reduced, workmen"s rates) brought new trade and the need for more housing to the area. The area rapidly became built up, and by the time of World War II was a major target for Luftwaffe bombing campaigns.

Since then, Tottenham has become most notorious for being one of the most deprived areas of North London and the scene of the Broadwater Farm riots in 1985. Since then, the area has done much to recover, and is now reputed to be the most ethnically diverse part of Western Europe. The 2011 England riots were sparked in Tottenham, which saw some of the worst looting.

• Metropolitan Line (purple) runs through Wembley and Harrow terminating outside the London region in Watford and Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire .

• Jubilee Line (silver) runs through Wembley terminating at Stanmore.

• Bakerloo Line (brown) runs through Wembley terminating at Harrow and Wealdstone

• Northern Line (black) has two branches one terminating at Edgware and the other at High Barnet with a sub-branch line to Mill Hill East.

• Piccadilly Line (dark blue) terminates at Cockfosters, and also crosses the south part of Wembley and Harrow.

• Victoria Line (light blue) runs through Tottenham terminating at Walthamstow.

• From Marylebone to Wembley and Harrow.

• From Euston (part of the overground network, orange) through Wembley, along the same route as the Bakerloo line, to Harrow then continuing to Watford .

• From St Pancras to Hendon and Mill Hill.

• From Kings Cross to Barnet and Enfield.

• From Liverpool Street to Tottenham and Enfield.

• Tottenham Hale station is a stop on the Stansted Express from Stansted Airport to Liverpool Street.

The North Circular Road (A406) is the main west to east road through North London. It has junctions with:

Crouch End [ edit ]

• Tricky as there is no tube to Crouch End
• Crouch End can be accessed relatively easily by the London Overground railway line, by transferring at Gospel Oak.
• You can take a number 91 bus from Trafalgar Square (calls at Aldwych, Holborn, Euston and King"s Cross) but it takes almost an hour (off peak) from Trafalgar Square.
• Alternatively you can go by tube to Archway and then take bus number 41 to Crouch End. Or take a Victoria Line/Piccadilly Line train to Finsbury Park, and then the W7 bus.
• There is also a W5 local bus, which runs from Sainsbury"s at Harringay Green Lanes and serves the YMCA just down from Crouch End Broadway.
