There are four seasons in a year: spring, summer, autumn and winter. Every season is beautiful in its own way.

When spring comes nature awakens from its long winter sleep. The days become longer and the nights become shorter. The ground is covered with emerald-green grass and the first flowers. The air is fresh, the sky is blue and cloudless, and the sun shines brightly. The trees are in full blossom. The nightingale begins to sing its lovely songs, and sweet melodies may be heard from every wood and park. The days are warm and everything is full of life and joy.

Spring is followed by summer. The weather is usually fine in summer, but it can be very hot, especially in July. Sometimes there are storms with thunder and lightning. In summer people try to go away from the city noise and spend more time in the open air. They pick mushrooms and berries in the forest, swim in the rivers and lakes, go fishing and boating. Most people prefer to have their holidays in summer.

Autumn begins in September. The days become shorter and the nights become longer. The leaves turn yellow» red and brown and fall to the ground. Most birds fly away to warm countries. There is a short spell of dry sunny weather in September, which is called "Indian Summer". It is a beautiful time when the sky is cloudless, the trees around are golden, the air is transparent and it is still warm. But gradually it gets colder and colder. It often rains in October and November which makes autumn an unpleasant season.

In winter the sun sets early and rises late. The rivers and lakes are frozen over. Everything is covered with snow. Some* times it is very cold, about 25-30 °C below zero. Going out in such weather isn"t very pleasant. Winter is a good time for sports. People go in for skating and skiing. Tobogganing is also popular, not as a kind of sports, but rather as a fun.

As for me, I like all seasons, but I think - there is nothing like late spring.

В году четыре сезона: весна, лето, осень и зима. Каждое время года красиво по-своему.

Когда наступает весна, природа пробуждается от зимнего сна. Дни становятся длиннее, а ночи становятся короче. Земля покрыта изумрудно-зеленой травой и первыми цветами. Воздух свеж, небо синее и безоблачное, а солнце ярко сияет. Деревья расцветают. Соловей начинает петь свои прекрасные песни, и эти сладкие мелодии можно услышать в каждом лесу и парке. Дни теплые, и все полно жизни и радости.

За весной следует лето. Погода летом обычно чудесная, но может быть очень жарко, особенно в июле. Иногда бывают грозы с громом и молнией. Летом люди стараются уехать от городского шума и проводить больше времени под открытым небом. Они собирают грибы и ягоды в лесу, купаются в реках и озерах, рыбачат и плавают на лодке. Большинство людей предпочитает брать отпуск летом.

Осень начинается в сентябре. Дни становятся короче, а ночи - длиннее. Листья становятся желтыми, красными и коричневыми и падают на землю. Большинство птиц улетает в теплые страны. В сентябре бывает короткий период сухой солнечной погоды, который называют «бабьим летом». Это красивое время, когда небо безоблачно, деревья вокруг золотые, воздух прозрачен, и все еще тепло. Но постепенно становится все холоднее и холоднее. В октябре и ноябре часть идет дождь, делающий осень неприятным временем года.

There are many holidays in our country. They are New Year Day, Victory Day, Christmas and others.

I"d like to tell you about my favorite holiday - New Year"s Day. Peter the First changed the Rus-sian calendar. The first of January 1700 became New Year Day. The weather is usually fine and there is a lot of snow everywhere. Children don"t go to school because winter holidays. We usually have got very interesting party at school.

Our family prepares for this holiday before hand. My father buys and brings home a beautiful New Year"s Tree. I like to decorate the Tree with toys, little colored lights, sweets and stars.

My mother and grandmother prepare our holidays supper. I make a cake.

We like to see the New Year in at home with our relatives.

At 12 o"clock we are sitting at the table and say "Best wishes for the New Year".

The New Year is always connected with our new plans and dreams.

It is a pleasant moment to get presents on the New Year.

At night we watch TV, dance, make jokes and go for a walk with my friends.

I enjoy this holiday very much.

Наша семья готовится к этому празднику перед рукой. Мой отец покупает и приносит домой красивое Новогоднее Дерево. Я люблю украшать Дерево игрушками, небольшими цветными огнями, конфетами и звездами.

Моя мать и бабушка готовят наш ужин отпуска. Я делаю пирог.

Мы любим видеть Новый год в дома с нашими родственниками.

В 12 часов мы сидим за столом и говорим "Наилучшие пожелания в течение Нового года".

Новый год всегда связывается с нашими новыми планами и мечтами.

Это - приятный момент, чтобы получить подарки на Новом годе.

Ночью мы смотрим телевизор, танцуем, отпускаем шутки и выходим на прогулку с моими друзьями.

Я наслаждаюсь этим праздником очень.

Whereas New Year is mostly an occasion merely for parties and drinking in the West, most of the traditions associated with Christmas fall on New Year in Russia. The welcoming of the new year is considered the most significant occasion of the winter.

The New Year"s tree is identical to a Christmas tree in the West. It is decorated in the same way, with ornaments, lights and garland. Stars are usually perched atop the tree rather than angels, and ornaments of a religious nature as well as nativity scenes are notably absent.

Folklore holds that Ded Moroz ("Grandfather Frost") is charged with the responsibility for delivering presents on New Year"s Eve. He is a large, bearded and grandfatherly man resembling Santa Claus, although he has no saintly identity, nor sleigh nor reindeer. He is sometimes said to be dressed in blue rather than red - this is a point of contention. Either way, he emerges on New Year"s Eve with a gargantuan, overflowing sack of gifts and dispenses them to each family. The actual procedure of doing this is not a significant component of the mythology; he doesn"t come down the chimney, but it doesn"t really matter how he gets into your dwelling. Perhaps through the front door, perhaps through the window - who knows?

Instead of elves to help him, Ded Moroz has his grand-daughter Snegurochka ("Snowy"), with whom he lives somewhere in the northern forest. Snegurochka is generally portrayed as an attractive young blonde girl, often dressed in light winter attire and sometimes a red cap. Presents are also given on New Year. There is no requirement of waiting until the morning of New Year"s Day to open them; instead, they are usually presented and opened shortly after greeting the New Year at midnight.

The year is divided into four seasons: winter, spring, summer, and autumn. Each season has its good and bad sides.
The weather in spring is generally mild but sometimes the days are really cold, especially in the beginning of the season. It is the time when everything awakes from its winter sleep.
Summer is the hottest season. It"s time for holidays. People go to the seaside to sunbathe, to swim or to have a rest. In our country it usually gets hot in the end of June and July. Summer nights are short, but wonderful, the days are long.
Talking about autumn, I guess it isn"t as niece as summertime. It"s a season of winds and beautiful sunsets. The weather gets cooler and cooler. The leaves turn yellow and reddish and fall down to the ground and the birds migrate to warm countries.
A spell of sunny weather in September is called Indian summer or « Golden Autumn», In the end of November it sometimes snows. Though some people like autumn, because it is full of colours, but to my thinking it"s a dull and rainy season.
Winter is the coldest time of the year. It is time of snow and frost. It is time of New Year and Christmas. In winter the temperature rarely can cross the point of ten or fifteen centigrade below freezing point in our country.
